MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Several current and former Mountaineers represented West Virginia University at the 2012 USA Shooting National Championships, May 31 – June 11, in Fort Benning, Ga.

Redshirt-junior Daniel Sojka and senior Chance Cover were the only current Mountaineers to compete.

Sojka, a Cracow, Poland, native earned his best finish in the men’s 10m air rifle, placing 15th with an aggregate score of 1172 (588, 584). He also placed 16th in the men’s 50m 3 position with an aggregate score of 2298 (1148, 1150).

Cover, a native of Ardmore, Okla., placed 22nd in the men’s 50m 3 position with an aggregate score of 2270 (1132, 1138). He also finished 27th in the men’s 10m air rifle with a two-day total of 1146 (577, 569) and shot a three-day total of 1759 (581, 587, 591) in the men’s 50m prone competition.

Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond finished first among all visitors in the men’s 50m prone with a three-day total of 1784 (591, 596, 597). The Aberdeen, Scotland, native also finished 12th in the men’s 50m 3 position with an aggregate total of 2310 (1155, 1155).

Incoming freshman Garrett Spurgeon won the men’s junior 50m 3 position with a 2315 (1153, 1162) aggregate score. He also finished first in the men’s junior 10m air rifle, shooting 1172 (588, 584) in the open relay and a field-best 103.5 in the finals for a total of 1275.5. Spurgeon also placed third in the men’s junior 50m prone, shooting 1772 (588, 591, 593) in the open relay and 100.8 in the final for a total of 1872.8.

Of note, former Mountaineer Bryant Wallizer won the men’s 10m air rifle with a 1291.0 total. He shot 1187 (591, 596) in the open relay and 104.0 in the final. Wallizer also placed seventh in the men’s 50m prone, shooting 1778 (588, 595, 595) in the three-day competition and a final’s aggregate total of 202.1 (102.0, 100.1) for a final score of 1980.1. He also placed 13th in the men’s 50m 3 position with an aggregate score of 2307 (1145, 1162).

Additionally, Eric Uptagrafft, a former WVU shooter set to shoot for the United States at the 2012 London Summer Olympics, placed third in the men’s 50m rifle prone with a final total of 1998.1. He shot a three-day total of 1792 (598, 598, 596) and a final’s aggregate total of 206.1 (103.7, 102.4).
