MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former West Virginia track All-American Karly Hamric put together an outstanding effort Thursday afternoon in the 1,500-meter run preliminaries to advance to Friday’s semifinals at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.
The Bruceton Mills, W.Va., native ran the event in 4:15.33 to place seventh in Heat 2 and seventh overall in the field of 30 athletes to advance to the semifinals, which take place Friday evening at 6:45 p.m. ET.
“Karly was the final athlete added to this meet,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “To run as well as she did today in advancing shows that anything can happen. It’s exciting to watch our homegrown talent competing on a stage second only to the Olympic Games itself.”
The top 24 runners from the preliminaries advance to the semifinals as a result of finishing in the top six from each of the three heats as well as the top six of the remaining athletes. Hamric, representing Riadha, was the top non-automatic qualifying athlete to advance as her time was better than 12 of the automatic qualifiers.
Morgan Uceny of adidas finished first in 4:14.07 and was followed by Gabriele Anderson (4:14.23), Katherine Mackey (4:14.28), Margaret Infeld (4:14.60), Treniere Moser (4:14.79) and Greta Feldman (4:14.89), all competing in Hamric’s heat.
The top 12 finishers in Friday’s semifinals advance to Sunday’s finals round (7:23 p.m. ET), of which the top three finishers advance to represent the United States at the 2012 London Olympic Games in August.
After competing in the 100-meter hurdles semifinals last weekend, WVU senior Chelsea Carrier-Eades
will compete in the first four events of the heptathlon Friday with the 100-meter hurdles (1:30 p.m.), high jump (2:30 p.m.), shot put (4:15 p.m.) and 200-meter dash at 5:15 p.m.
The final three heptathlon events occur Saturday with the long jump (6 p.m.), javelin throw (7:15 p.m.) and 800-meter run at 9:20 p.m. The heptathlon field will consist of the nation’s top 18 heptathletes.
