Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team Announced

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.The Big 12 Conference office named 39 West Virginia student-athletes to the 2013-14 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team today, which honors conference competitors who are new, incoming freshmen at their respective league institution. 
A total of 455 student-athletes were named to the team, led by Texas with 71 honorees, and followed by Oklahoma (69), Baylor (50), Kansas (50) and Oklahoma State (40), respectively.
Among the honorees, 35 student-athletes were nominated with 4.0 grade point averages, including cross country/track athlete Jillian Forsey, swimming and diving’s Frank Csonka and Nathan Howells, track and field athlete Allie Diehl and volleyball player Hannah Shreve.
WVU’s rowing team placed 11 student-athletes on the squad: Alisha Brownfield, Whitney Chrisman, Emily Deming, Audrey Geise, Marika Hoskins, Jacqueline Hunter, Madison James, Anna Kretzer, Louisa Morgan, Hannah Onians and Olivia White. Beside Csonka and Howells, Austin Green, Lindsay Morrow and Emma Skelley from swimming and diving were honored. WVU’s women’s soccer and wrestling each had four athletes honored. Women’s soccer players included Kadeisha Buchanan, Ashley Lawrence, Daniela Neves and Ashley Woolpert, while wrestling had Bryson Begley, Zach Heeter, Tyler Millward and Christian Stone named to the team.
Sophie Allen-Fisher, Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole were named to the All-Big 12 Rookie Team from the women’s tennis team. Mountaineer men’s basketball had Nathan Adrian and Brandon Watkins honored, while gymnastics had Mackenzie Myers and Nicolette Swoboda. In addition to Forsey, the cross country/track team had Amy Cashin represented on the team, while Jordan Anderson represented volleyball beside Shreve, and Bria Welker represented track and field beside Diehl. Baseball had Jackson Cramer named, while Lubirdia Gordon was named for women’s basketball.
Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshman that have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team’s scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
