Women's Soccer: Henderson Honored
“I’ve had the privilege to work with Erica throughout her career and she is a perfect example of what hard training and an unstoppable work ethic can do for an athlete,” says strength coach Jerry Handley. “I am very proud of her as she continues her playing career overseas.” A Rochester, N.Y., native, Henderson appeared in 88 matches for the Mountaineers, scoring 22 career points on 10 goals and two assists. The center back helped West Virginia defenses record 38 shutouts in the last three seasons, including a school-record 14 shutouts in 2010. Henderson, an National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) second team all-Northeast region selection, helped the Mountaineers record 59 wins in the last four seasons. A four-time NCAA tournament participant, she guided WVU to a pair of BIG EAST division titles and back-to-back BIG EAST Championships (2010, 2011). In January, Henderson was drafted in the fourth round of the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) Draft by the Western New York Flash. With the league currently suspending operations for the 2012 season, she leaves next week to play in Iceland for Afturelding FC. Afturelding is a member of Iceland’s top league – Urvalsdeild. This is the 33rd year of the NSCA recognition program. Henderson is the seventh Mountaineer to earn the honor, and first since defender Robin Rushton was recognized in 2008. |
