McCarthy Going Pro
The 55 allocated players will be spread out among Boston, Chicago, Kansas City, Portland, Seattle, New Jersey, Washington D.C. and Western New York. The club location for all players will be announced tomorrow. The U.S. Soccer Federation, Canadian Soccer Association and Mexican Football Federation will subsidize the league by paying the salaries for their national team participants. McCarthy is one of 16 Canadians to obtain a paid professional contract, of which 13 players were members of the bronze medal-winning team at the 2012 London Olympic Games. A 32-player collegiate draft will be held on January 18 at the annual NSCAA Convention. Only players who completed their college eligibility will be able to be selected from the draft. Players who have been out of college for more than a year, or former players in previous leagues, will be considered free agents. McCarthy helped West Virginia to a 13th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance in 2012 while earning National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America Third Team honors. The outside back was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the program’s first defensive player to earn a conference major award. |
