Mountaineers Named to Big 12 Honor Roll

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.-- The Big 12 Conference released its 2012 Fall Commissioner’s Honor Roll with a total of 239 West Virginia University student-athletes making the list. The conference recognizes all student-athletes at its member institutions during each semester with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Of the 239 WVU student-athletes recognized for their academic excellence, 39 registered a GPA of 4.0 in the fall semester.

The 39 Mountaineers named to the list with a perfect 4.0 GPA in the semester include: Brock Dykxhoorn (baseball), Averee Fields (women’s basketball), Connor Arlia, Jeff Braun, Nick Kindler, Kyle Majnaric, Nate Majnaric, Ryan Nehlen and Corey Smith (football), Mary Ignatiadis, Jeannine McCarty, Hilary Meale, Courtney Schrand, Ellen Shular, Karen Verwey and Danielle Widecrantz (rowing), Carly Black, Kara Blosser, Ali Connelly, Amanda Hill, Caitlin Hulyo (women’s soccer), Nathan Cobbe and David Palley (men’s swimming), Morgan Emter, Sloan Storie and Jenelle Zee (women’s swimming), Vivian Tsui (women’s tennis), Sarah-Anne Brault, Rachel Buser, Sydney Cummings, Kaitlyn Gillespie, Peyton Hampson, Jordan Hamric, Brianna Kerekes, Aubrey Moskal, Savanna Plombon and Kelly Williams (track), Nikki Attea and Liz Gulick (volleyball).

The cross country/track and football teams led all Mountaineer athletic teams with 37 and 32 honorees, respectively, on the honor roll. Other total student-athletes on the honor roll include baseball (26), rowing (24), women’s soccer (24), women’s swimming (22), men’s swimming (20), wrestling (13), gymnastics (11), volleyball (9), women’s basketball (8), tennis (7) and men’s basketball (6).

WVU saw 26 current or former student-athletes earn degrees in fall 2012 commencement ceremonies in December. Highlighting the 26 graduates were 11 members of the football team, four each from women’s and men’s soccer, two each from men’s swimming and rifle and one member from rowing, track and wrestling.

In addition, a total of 24 WVU student-athletes earned Academic All-Big 12 recognition in football, volleyball, women’s soccer and cross country this past fall.
