Women's Tennis: Martha Thorn RecapSeptember 12, 2010 03:29 PM MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team concluded its eighth annual Martha Thorn Invitational with two titles and two runner-ups. WVU freshmen Melis Tanik and Allison Arnold dominated their flights in the singles competition, capturing the only two titles for the Mountaineers. Tanik conquered the flight ‘C’ singles competition after defeating Duquesne’s Alrissa Tobe, 6-1, 6-2, while Arnold took the title in flight ‘D’ after a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Xavier’s Natalie Handler. Junior Veronica Cardenas and freshman Mary Chupa also had a good showing in the singles competition as the flight ‘A’ and flight ‘B’ runner-ups. Cardenas made it to the semi-finals after defeating Youngstown’s Annie Jesko, 6-1, 6-1, but fell short in the finals in a tough 6-1, 6-3 match. Chupa also eased through the semi-final round, but was stopped short of a title by Duquesne’s Samantha Noble. Freshman Anna Rodionova and juniors Kathryn Haught and Catie Wickline placed third in their respective flights. In doubles action, WVU’s No. 1, 2 and 3 doubles pairs made it to the flight ‘A’ semi-finals. The No. 1 pair of Rodionova and sophomore Emily Mathis defeated Morehead 7-3 in a tiebreaker, but came up short in the semi-finals in a close 8-6 match against Duquesne. The Mountaineers’ No. 4 and 5 doubles pairs made it to the flight ‘B’ semi-final round, but were narrowly defeated by Duquesne (8-6) and MSU (8-5). The flight ‘B’ doubles competition was won by MSU’s No. 3 team. The Mountaineers will continue action Sept. 24-26, as they travel to West Point, N.Y., to compete in the Army ECAC Invitational.
