MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team was defeated by Bowling Green today, in a 1-6 match in Louisville, Ky.
“We’re extremely disappointed at how we competed,” says coach Tina Samara. “Like I told the team, we can come up with a million excuses for why we lost, but that doesn’t change how the girls should compete when they’re out there. If we would’ve competed well, we would’ve walked away with a different result.”
The Falcons started the match by sweeping the doubles competition, then continued to lead in the singles competition.
Freshman Melis Tanik captured the lone win for the Mountaineers in a third-set tiebreaker against the Falcons’ Christine Chiricosta. After falling 4-6 in the first set, Tanik came back during the second set to win, 6-0. Tanik closed-out the match, winning 16-14 in the third set.
“I’m taking most of the blame on myself, because I didn’t get them where they needed to be,” adds Samara. “We can control the things that went wrong, so hopefully, it will change for tomorrows match. They’re better than that and they need to start playing at the level they’re capable of playing.”
The Mountaineers will continue action in Louisville, Ky., tomorrow, as they go up against the Cardinals in a 9 a.m. match.
