Women's Tennis: Day One Results
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team completed day one of the Eastern Championships with a good showing in the singles and doubles competitions. Sophomore Emily Mathis started the day with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over St. Bonaventure’s Amanda Pallikunnel, followed by defeating Quinnipiac’s Rachel Cantor in a 6-2, 6-2 match. After a 7-5, 6-1 win over Stony Brook’s Katherine Hanson, Mathis will be competing in the flight ‘B’ semi-finals. Junior Veronica Cardenas also captured three victories for the Mountaineers, which landed her a spot in the flight ‘C’ semi-final round. Cardenas started the competition with two big wins over Providence’s Ayashi Sinha and UMASS’s Clara Matias, then continued her winning-streak with 6-2, 6-1 victory over Seton Hall’s Elizabeth Verow. Freshman Melis Tanik, will be competing for a spot in the flight ‘D’ semi-final round against Pitt’s Adela Aprodu. After shutting out her first opponent, Tanik captured another victory in a 6-0, 6-2 match against UMASS’s Gabby Jannotta. Senior Ashley Pilsbury fought for a win in the flight ‘A’ singles competition, but fell short in a 6-1, 6-2 match against Rhode Island’s Pam Emery. In doubles action, WVU’s lone pair of junior Catie Wickline and freshman Anna Rodionova were defeated in their first match of the day by Pitt‘s Kimmy Borza and Karma Parbhu, but came back in the consolation doubles competition for a spot in the semi-finals. Match times and results will be posted on Army’s website after the conclusion of each day’s matches. |
