MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – In the finale of its spring break trip to Florida, the West Virginia University women’s tennis team was defeated by UCF, 6-1, at the UCF Tennis Complex in Orlando, Fla.

“We were outplayed by UCF this afternoon,” said coach Tina Samara. “We corrected the body language issues that we had yesterday and gave a better overall effort, but UCF was simply better than us today.”

The Knights took an early lead in the match, as they earned the doubles point by sweeping the doubles matches from the Mountaineers.

The combo of sophomore Mary Chupa and freshman Ikttesh Chahal were defeated 8-5, while senior Veronica Cardenas and junior Emily Mathis lost 8-6.

With their lead at 2-0 heading into singles play after a default in the No. 6 singles match by WVU, UCF worked to close out the match.

In the No. 1 singles match, Genevieve Lorbergs knocked off Chupa, 6-1, 6-3.

In the No. 2 singles match, Mathis lost a tough match in straight sets to the Knights’ Alexis Rodriguez.

“Emily’s matchup in singles didn’t fit her style of play,” Samara said. “Emily is more of a counter hitter, and her opponent was able to take advantage of that. (UCF coach) Stephanie Nickitas told me after the match that Rodriguez can be a bit of streaky player, but it is clear that she was on top of her game against Emily.”

The Mountaineers’ lone match win of the day came by way of Chahal. In the No. 4 singles spot, Chahal defeated Josephine Haraldson, 6-0, 6-4 for her sixth singles win of the year.

“Ikttesh won the first set of her match pretty handily, and that was great to see,” Samara said. “She was up midway through the second set, and then fell behind, but she was able to close the match out and get the win. Every tennis player goes through stages where they have to learn how to win in certain situations, and Ikttesh had a bit of breakthrough today.”

The Mountaineers will now return for their final home match of the season against California (Pa.) on April 7 at 1 p.m. at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
