MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team closed out a successful weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational in Wake Forest, N.C., with senior Emily Mathis and freshman Hailey Barrett placing third in their respective singles bracket.

“Today was another good day for us,” said coach Tina Samara. “Emily played one of the best matches I’ve seen her play.”

Mathis was able to defeat Stetson’s Lindsey Cable, 6-2, 6-1. Cable was selected as an All-Atlantic Sun performer during her freshman year in 2010-11 and boasts a 34-6 career record in spring singles play.

“Emily really put together all the things we have worked on over the last two years,” Samara said. “She imposed her will on the court.”

The win over Cable gave the Mountaineers a 3-0 record against opponents from Stetson on the weekend, after WVU was defeated by the Hatters 7-0 during the 2012 spring season.

“Stetson is a team that finished 13-6 overall last season and had wins against quality opponents throughout the year,” Samara said. “It is good to see that we are making strides like that.”

In Barrett’s placement match, the Lansing, Mich., native was able to knock off UNC-Greensboro’s Annette Rios, 1-6, 6-0, 10-8.

“Hailey also did a great job,” Samara said. “She was able to defeat a very good player from UNCG in order to place third.”

Also placing for the Mountaineers was sophomore Ikttesh Chahal, who finished the weekend fifth in her bracket.

Senior Audrey Wooland won the consolation portion of her singles bracket on Saturday evening.

WVU will close out its fall season in two weeks, as it will participate in the ITA Regionals in Blacksburg, Va. on Oct. 19-23.
