MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team closed out its Big 12 Conference road trip to Texas, today, with a 7-0 loss to the No. 21-ranked Longhorns.
In doubles, the Mountaineers (3-12, 0-4 Big 12) surrendered the doubles point after dropping three matches. Texas took the No. 3 doubles match, 8-3, downing sophomores Irinka Toidze
and Vivian Tsui
. The point was clinched for the Longhorns with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, with the freshmen tandem of Kaja Mrgole
and Oana Manole
dropping its third consecutive decision. Sophomore Hailey Barrett
and junior Ikttesh Chahal
battled Ratnika Batra and Neda Koprcina, but were unable to pull out the victory, dropping the match 8-6.
WVU's woes continued into singles play, as Pippa Horn extended Texas' lead with a 6-0, 6-1, victory over Tsui. At No. 1 singles, Barrett was defeated by No. 18 Breaunna Addison, 6-2, 6-0. Mrgole stumbled against the 114th-ranked player in the country, Elizabeth Begley, 6-4, 6-3. Manole forced No. 89 Batra to a 7-5 first set, but could not continue her momentum into the second, falling in 7-5, 6-3. The match was sealed at No. 6 singles when Toidze fell, 6-2, 6-2.
The Mountaineers return to Morgantown to host Texas Tech on March 28 at 1 p.m., and TCU on March 30 at 10 a.m.
