Novice Four Crew Named Athletes of the Week
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (April 16, 2012) - The novice four crew of Bethany Anne Sapen, Melinda Sharon, Enya Messersmith, Kaitlyn Eason and coxswain Alexandra Basil are the WVU Student-Athletes of the week following their sixth-place finish out of 47 crews in the Grand Final of the Knecht Cup, Sunday, on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
The novice four advanced to the Grand Final of their event for the second consecutive year, after placing first in both their preliminary heat (8:23.67) and semifinal (8:30.38).
The crew raced against Duquesne ‘A’, Villanova ‘A’, Fairfield, Old Dominion and Delaware in the Grand Final, ultimately crossing the line in 8:34.05.

This Week in WVU Baseball
The Mountaineers will face Akron in a midweek non-conference game at Munson Stadium in Canton, Ohio, on Tuesday, April 17 at 5 p.m. … WVU then returns home for a weekend series against Pitt from April 20-22 … Friday’s game begins at 7:05 p.m., Saturday’s game at 2 p.m. and Sunday’s finale begins at 1 p.m.
Last Week in WVU Baseball
WVU has lost four in a row, after losing one at Maryland and three at Rutgers last weekend … WVU was defeated by Maryland, 3-0, while the three game sweep by Rutgers included scores of 3-2, 8-4 and 3-1.
Junior right fielder Chris Rasky led WVU at the plate over the week, batting 5-for-11 with one run, one home run and one RBI … Rasky led WVU on Sunday with four hits, all singles … sophomore right-handed Corey Walter had a great Friday night start for the Mountaineers, lasting 8.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits.

The Mountaineers will host Dayton this weekend in just the third home spring race in program history ... racing will take place on Saturday, April 21 on the Monongahela River in Star City.

All West Virginia crews entered for competition at the Knecht Cup advanced to the Finals of their events for just the fourth time in program history … the novice four crew comprised of Bethany Anne Sapen, Melinda Sharon, Enya Messersmith, Kaitlyn Eason and coxswain Alexandra Basil advanced to the Grand Final of its event for the second consecutive year, ultimately placing sixth out of 47 crews with a time of 8:35.05 … the varsity eight crew of Hilary Meale, Jenelle Spencer, Rachelle Purych, Danielle Widecrantz, Kelly Kramer, Shannon Gribbons, Karen Verwey, Courtney Schrand and coxswain finished fourth in the Petite Final of its event, crossing the finish line in 6:42.72 for an overall finish of tenth out of 31 entries … the varsity four and second varsity eight both advanced to the Third Final in their respective events … the second varsity eight crew of Jessica Hurlbert, Mollie Rosen, Elizabeth Duarte, Rachel Cokeley, Jessica Kelly, Amanda Hirsch, Danika Rencken, Lisa Deklau and coxswain Ellen Shular ultimately finished in fifth place with a time of 7:16.68 while the varsity four crew of Sarah Hansard, Tamyra Roberts, Rebecca Knecht, Brianna Dendler and coxswain Sarah Cartwright finished first in their final with a time of 8:01.28.

The Mountaineers traveled to the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio, to compete for conference and regional qualifying times … senior Chelsea Carrier-Eades placed second in both the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles, recording a 13.37 in the 100-meter and a 59.02 in the 400-meter hurdles … redshirt sophomore Sarah Martinelli earned a fourth-place 4:31.76 in the 1,500-meter run to re-qualify for the event at BIG EAST … junior Sydney Cummings came in second in the high jump with a 1.65-meter height … Stormy Nesbit and Meghan Mock excelled in the long jump, with Nesbit earning third place at 5.99 meters and Mock placing seventh at 5.71 meters … Nesbit also placed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.96, her second-best of the year … Katlyn Shelar excelled in the pole vault with a fifth-place vault of 3.70 meters … Carrie Long achieved 11th place with a vault of 3.55 meters … freshman Karissa Knabenshue was lifted from a redshirt season and competed in the shot put and discus throw … she placed 24th in the discus with a throw of 41.61 meters.

Knabenshue’s 41.61-meter discus throw is fourth-best all-time for WVU in the event, topping Becky Gorby’s 39.99 distance from 1987 … Carrier-Eades’ 13.37 was a season-best for the 100-meter hurdles ... the 4:31.76 for Martinelli in the 1,500-meter was a career-best … Nesbit earned a career-best in the long jump with her 5.99-meter jump … senior Terina Miller earned a second-best personal mark of 55.09 meters in the hammer throw … a total of 19 athletes have qualified for 13 events at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in Tampa, Fla., in early May … Carrier-Eades, Kate Harrison and Mock are returning All-Americans from the 2011 outdoor season … the Mountaineers look to achieve a Top-20 national finish for a fifth consecutive year in outdoor track.

The Mountaineers took their final road trip of the season and completed their 2012 spring season with matches against Seton Hall and Rutgers … the Pirates were victorious on Saturday, 4-3, while the Scarlet Knights dealt WVU a 6-1 loss.
WVU finished the year with a 4-16 mark overall … senior Veronica Cardenas finished the season as the team’s leader in singles wins with 10 during the course of the spring … Cardenas also led the team in doubles win for the season, as she collected nine total wins with various teammates … freshman Ikttesh Chahal rebounded nicely from a rough start to her season, as she finished the year with four consecutive singles wins, which gave her a total of nine … Chahal had a 7-2 record when playing in the No. 4 singles spot.
