MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – To honor the state of West Virginia’s 150 years of existence, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at West Virginia University has created a special logo to celebrate the history, traditions and pride of the state.

“As the flagship institution of higher learning in the state of West Virginia, we take enormous pride in celebrating the sesquicentennial with Mountaineer fans,” says Director of Athletics Oliver Luck. “The state of West Virginia was forged from the Civil War and the motto of the state—Mountaineers are Always Free (Montani Semper Liberi) describes perfectly the approach that West Virginians have always taken. Our people are proud, hard working and self-reliant, and, together with the citizens of the state of West Virginia, we are delighted we can celebrate this important milestone."

The logo will be displayed by each of WVU’s 17 sports teams, with the unveiling at this Saturday’s home-opening football game against William & Mary. The commemorative logo is the outline of the state of West Virginia with a large 150 in the middle, and can be seen on the back of every football helmet throughout the 2013 season. Incorporating it into each of the sport teams will vary depending on uniform; some will have stickers, while other teams will have a patch.

“From the dawn of statehood, West Virginians have embodied a fiery spirit for our beloved home,” Governor Earl Ray Tomblin said. “Today, as we celebrate our 150th birthday that same spirit and pride resonates with every West Virginian. These logos will show people how truly proud we are to be Mountaineers.”

In 1963, West Virginia’s 100th birthday, West Virginia University was asked to take part in helping promote the state’s Centennial Celebration. That season, St. Albans, W.Va., native Chuck Kinder was chosen to don the No. 100 jersey in honor of the state’s 100th birthday. The NCAA approved of Kinder, a kicker on the 1963 squad, to wear the No. 100 for the season.

June 20, 2013 was officially West Virginia’s 150th birthday, which will be celebrated all year long by the coaches, athletes and fans of West Virginia University.
