MORGANTOWN, W.VA. - The West Virginia University track and field team competed at the YSU College Invitational on Friday in Youngstown, Ohio.

The Mountaineers had participants in 10 events, while claiming third place in the team scoring.

“I was pleased to see the competitiveness begin to emerge for some within the group tonight,” says coach Sean Cleary. “This meet provided a level of competition that was perfect to a very high percentage of our group.”

The meet began at noon on Friday, and didn’t conclude until after midnight.

West Virginia had two competitors record first-place finishes. Freshman Sydney Scott placed first in the mile with a time of 5:03.45, and senior Stormy Nesbit won the triple jump for the second time in six days with a leap of 12.37 meters.

“It’s important to take each weekend in stride and meet the challenges presented to us,” Cleary says. “I feel we passed a few more of those tests today than we have been over the last few weeks.”

Sophomore Hannah Stone finished second in the high jump, tying her personal-best collegiate mark of 1.70 meters, while freshman Amy Cashin and senior Sarah Martinelli placed second and third, respectively, in the 800 meters.

Freshman Bria Welker recorded a third-place result in 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 25.59.

Youngstown State won the meet with a team score of 149.50, while Duquesne finish in second (143). West Virginia registered a team score of 106.50, finishing ahead of Pitt in fourth place (94).

“As we prepare for next week’s meet at Penn State, we need to continue to put ourselves in position to maximize our potential each and every time we hit the track,” Cleary says.

The Mountaineers are back in action next weekend at the PSU National in State College, Pa., for a two-day meet on Friday, Jan. 31, and Saturday, Feb. 1.
