Wrestling: WVU Splits at Binghamton Duals
By Steve Stone for MSNsportsNET.com VESTAL, N.Y. – The West Virginia University wrestling team split their two dual meets on Sunday, Nov. 18, at Binghamton University in Vestal, N.Y. The Mountaineers dominated their first meet against Sacred Heart, winning 37-3 over the Pioneers to get the squad off to a fast start. However, WVU fell to No. 2-ranked Iowa State in the afternoon meet, losing 24-9 against the Cyclones. WVU was led by Chance Litton, Kurt Brenner and Jared Villers, with each winning both their bouts on the day. In their morning meet against Sacred Heart, the Mountaineers recorded two pins and four major decisions in a 37-3 victory over Sacred Heart. Kyle Turnbull’s return to the mat was highlighted by a 6-3 decision over Ed Golvo in the 125-pound bout. Tyler Oravec, replacing injured All-American Brandon Rader at 141 pounds, earned a solid win over Pat Feeley in a 10-0 major decision. No. 16-rated David Jauregui helped give WVU a 10-3 lead through four matches after edging Anthony Priore in a 2-1 decision in the 149-pound match, followed by Donnie Jones’ major decision over Tom Sullivan, 18-5. 157-pounder Zac Fryling recorded a pin at 5:51 over Michael Powers to lead the Mountaineer onslaught as well. WVU started off slow but finished strong against powerhouse Iowa State. The Mountaineesr won three of the final four matches to end their second meet on a positive note. Litton won his second match after defeating Aron Scott at 174 pounds in a 6-3 decision. Brenner followed with a 10-8 decision over Christopher Parsel at 184 pounds. Villers continued the Mountaineer’s late trend of winning close matches by scoring a 6-4 decision over David Bertolino at 197 pounds. Head Coach Craig Turnbull was positive about his team’s performance despite the injuries to Rader and heavyweight Dustin Rogers. “It was good for us to start our first meet and we wrestled well,” says Turnbull. “We wrestled a very good team in Iowa State and three of our matches went down to the wire that we could have won, despite not having Rader. We really did some good things today.” WVU will compete at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., on Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
