Men's Basketball: Alexander Honored by Big East

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia’s Joe Alexander was named Big East player of the week after leading the Mountaineers to a pair of conference victories over Pitt and St. John’s last week.

Alexander, a 6-foot-8-inch junior forward, averaged 30.5 points and 8.0 rebounds for the week for the Mountaineers. Alexander matched his career high of 32 points in a Big Monday win over Pitt and added a 29-point, 10-rebound double-double in an 83-74 overtime victory at St. John’s on Saturday.

Alexander scored seven of his game-high 29 points during the overtime period and has boosted his scoring average to 16.2 points per game.

West Virginia locked up the No. 5 seed in the Big East Tournament when Syracuse beat Marquette on Saturday. The Mountaineers will face No. 12-seeded Providence Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm in the opening round of the tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
