Women's Soccer: Mountaineers Ranked 14thBy Tim Goodenow for MSNsportsNET.com
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team remained in the Top 15 in one collegiate soccer poll following its 1-0-1 weekend at the First Tennessee Lady Vols Classic. The Mountaineers earned a No. 14 ranking from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas poll and a No. 17 ranking from Soccer Buzz and Soccer America. West Virginia owns a 3-1-1 record after three weekends of action with its only loss coming to Santa Clara, currently ranked as high as 11th by Soccer Buzz. The Mountaineers have won three of their first four games to start a season in eight of the last nine years. Defender Greer Barnes picked up her second and third weekly award today, being named to Soccer Buzz and Soccer America’s Team of the Week. She was also named the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts. A Rye, N.Y., native, Barnes helped the Mountaineer defense record its third shutout of the season and logged all 200 minutes of action to earn All-Tournament Team and Defensive MVP honors. The senior took a game-high three shots in WVU’s win 1-0 over No. 20 Tennessee. Barnes and her teammates kept the Lady Vols off the scoreboard and held two-time SEC Player of the Year Kylee Rossie to one shot on goal. In WVU’s second game of the tournament, Barnes totaled three shots against Washington State. She also held U-20 national team player Kiersten Dallstream to one shot on-goal in the 1-1 draw. The Mountaineers return to action Thursday night with a home match against Kentucky. The contest will be broadcast live on the Fox Soccer Channel with kickoff slated for 8 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
