Once. That's the number of times West Virginia University has reached the Final Four in men's basketball. It happened in 1959 when basketball was still more of a rural game played on dirt courts in places like Indiana, Kentucky and, yes, the hills of West Virginia.
The Mountaineers had one of the game's great players in Jerry West, who like most of his WVU teammates, came from West Virginia; they shared similar hardships and experiences and they had similar outlooks on life. Those West Virginia boys and a coach named Fred Schaus took the Mountaineers to the mountaintop 50 years ago this year.
Special video clips and photos from the school archives have been made available, and several key players from that era were interviewed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of that special basketball season.
