  Jasper Howard

We often use the phrase "Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help" when something unexpected or bad happens to someone.

By now you know that the unexpected and tragic happened early Sunday morning when Connecticut football player Jasper Howard was stabbed to death. Words can’t describe the utter shock and horror this senseless act has produced within the Husky football program and the entire university community.

As college football fans and as members of the Big East Conference many are asking, “What they can do to help” in this time of mourning remembrance.

Here’s what you can do if you’re coming to Saturday’s Connecticut game: cheer.

That’s right, cheer for the Connecticut football team when they take the field prior to kickoff. Instead of the normal chorus of boos, which an opposing team receives, shower the Huskies with a standing ovation and cheers. Cheer for the memory of Jasper Howard and applaud and encourage the entire Connecticut football team for their ability to preservere in the face of a tragedy no one should have to experience.

There was already a movement underway within the WVU community to improve fan behavior. Saturday’s game against UConn will present an opportunity to show everyone who the “real” Mountaineer fans are and what West Virginia University is all about.

Yes, we’ll cheer for the Mountaineers on Saturday when the ball goes into the air. We’ll cheer for the Mountaineers to win and beat the Huskies - that part of it won’t change - but let’s change the way we greet the Huskies when they take the field. We owe it Jasper Howard, the UConn program, and to everyone who has been forced to experience this horrible loss.
