Football: BIG EAST Award Winners
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Sophomore quarterback Geno Smith, and junior defensive end Bruce Irvin have been named Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week by the BIG EAST Conference for their performances against ACC opponent Maryland. Smith completed 19 of 29 attempts for 268 yards and four touchdowns in the Mountaineers’ win over the Terrapins. He is the first quarterback to throw four touchdowns in one game since Jarrett Brown achieved the feat against East Carolina on Sept. 12, 2009. Smith now ranks first in the BIG EAST in passing yards (800), passing yards-per-game average (266.7 avg.) passing efficiency (157.7) and total offense (271.0 avg.). Irvin led the Mountaineer defense in sacks against Maryland, with three. His performance marked the first time a Mountaineer has done so since Julian Miller recorded three sacks against Louisville last season. Altogether, Irvin’s sacks accounted for a loss of 22 yards. He also racked up four solo tackles, a forced fumble and a pass breakup. Through three games, Irvin ranks third in the BIG EAST in sacks (1.0 sack-per-game) and fifth in tackles for loss (1.0 tfl-per-game). This week, WVU (3-0) travels to Baton Rouge, La., to face LSU (3-0) at Tiger Stadium (92,400) on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 9 p.m., ET. The game will be televised on ESPN2. |
