MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia men’s and women’s basketball programs will tip off their 2010-11 seasons with the Mountaineer Madness presented by Coke Zero, Friday, Oct. 15 at the WVU Coliseum.

The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. with an autograph session featuring selected men’s and women’s players at the Green and Gold gates. The on-court portion of the program will begin at 8:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Women’s coach Mike Carey and men’s coach Bob Huggins will each address the crowd as part of the raising of the women’s NCAA Tournament banner and the men’s BIG EAST Championship and Final Four banners. The men’s team will compete in a slam dunk contest and the women’s team will showcase a 3-point challenge. The event will conclude with a WVU men’s team scrimmage.

Each team set school records last season for the most victories in a season in program history. The women’s team, who recorded 29 wins, including an undefeated 17-0 home record, returns all five starters for this year’s season. The team earned two, No. 9 preseason rankings coming off a second-round NCAA Tournament appearance and BIG EAST Championship game appearance.

The men’s team concluded the 2009-10 campaign with a record-breaking 31 victories, winning its first BIG EAST Championship title and making a NCAA Final Four appearance for the first time since 1959. The men are predicted to finish this season third in the BIG EAST and were preseason picked No. 19 by Lindy’s Magazine.

The women’s team officially opens practice, Tuesday, Oct. 5, while the men’s team will hit the court following the Mountaineer Madness event.
