MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Throughout the WVU gymnastics team’s 2011 fall preseason, the Mountaineers will take the time out of their busy schedules to share stories of practice and preparation with the fans.

This year’s seventh entry comes from junior Nicole Roach. A two time all-EAGL first team bars honoree, Roach has been a dependable Mountaineer contributor since her first rookie meet. Though brief, her bars routine is high-energy and rivals some of the best in the nation. The South Lyons, Mich., native earned a spot on the beam lineup last season and looks to compete on both events this year.

I can’t believe the season is almost here! It seems as though we were just going through preseason doing a lot of numbers in the gym and working hard during strength and conditioning sessions. Now, our conditioning is all about maintaining what we have worked so hard for, and in the gym we are starting routines. Everyone seems very excited to be getting closer to the season.

Our annual Turkey-Indian intrasquad meet is right around the corner! All the girls are extremely excited to get started and show everyone what we have been working so hard on. We started routines much earlier this year, and it seems to really be paying off. Everyone looks more consistent, and we all seem to have a lot of confidence in both our own abilities, as well as those of our teammates.

One of our freshmen, Hope Sloanhoffer, has been doing great in the gym! She is hitting her skills and smiling all the time. She has such a positive attitude which seems to be rubbing off on many of us.

(Sophomore) Alaska Richardson has made so much progress since last season! Her vault and beam are much more consistent, and the new floor routine really fits her personality. She is not only pushing herself, but also everyone around her.

Not only are we excited about season, but we also are ready for Thanksgiving break to get here as well! We are all excited to get home and visit with family and relax before the season officially opens.

From what I have seen in the gym, I feel this could be our best season yet! As a group, we have made a lot of progress and have so much potential. I am very excited to see where our hard work and dedication, in and out of the gym, takes us this year!!

Let’s Go Mountaineers!
