MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – It’s the shoes, Money, it’s gotta be the shoes!
That is what Mars Blackmon said to Michael Jordan in those famous 1980s Nike commercials.
During Friday's Backyard Brawl in Pittsburgh, West Virginia will be wearing four different versions of shoes from the Nike Pro Combat line. Each shoe is tailored to specific skills – a different pair each for the linemen, backs and defensive players.
Those shoes will be on display along with West Virginia’s brand new Pro Combat uniforms to commemorate the memory of the 29 fallen miners in the Upper Big Branch mining disaster last April.
West Virginia coach Bill Stewart said he is excited that his team will be wearing these new uniforms because of the meaning behind them.
“Back in the day, I didn’t have a leather helmet, but it wasn’t far off,” he said. “I’m an Old Gold and Blue guy, believe me, but that uniform is us – that’s who we are. We’re going out on the field representing the people of this great state in a uniform that means a lot to our players.”
Stewart said his players love the new look that the team will be displaying for the 103rd Backyard Brawl this Friday at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
“If you are a West Virginian, and that uniform does not crank you up, then there’s something wrong,” he said.
Kickoff for Friday’s game is set for noon. It will be televised on ABC.
