Gymnastics Diary: Alaska Richardson
This year’s ninth entry comes from sophomore Alaska Richardson. A solid vault contributor throughout her rookie campaign, the Dayton, Ohio, native returns for her second season with the Mountaineers having upgraded all four of her routines. With aspirations of being a three-event contributor this season, Richardson should have a major impact on WVU’s 2011 success. As much as it pains me to say this, Thanksgiving has come and gone, but I am glad to be back in the gym with my teammates and hearing about their vacations. Everyone really enjoyed her time with family and friends…and eating turkey of course! Now we’re back and it’s time to kick it all back into gear as we begin to prepare for next week’s Gold-Blue intrasquad meet. I can’t believe it is right around the corner! I’m not worried, though. The team has been working very hard every day, and we are all motivating each other and staying positive. With all this talent we have, I’m excited for the season to come! Before the break, we had our Turkey-Indian intrasquad, and though there were a few nerves along the way, everyone did a good job pushing them back and giving her best effort! Freshman Hope Sloanhoffer did her thing that day by hitting all four events with ease. She’s going to make a very big impact this year! Junior Nicole Roach busted out a gorgeous vault, and all of her hard work on floor is really starting to pay off. I have faith that this team can go far this year, but like (coach) Linda (Burdette-Good) says, “Let’s not get crazy.” We’re going to take everything one step at a time. Our next stop? Gold-Blue! Let’s do it! Let’s go Mountaineers! |
