Baseball: WVU Picked Ninth
The Mountaineers earned 38 total points. WVU went 27-30 in 2010 and finished the year 10-17 in the BIG EAST, qualifying for the BIG EAST Championship. Redshirt-senior third baseman Grant Buckner was named to the preseason all-BIG EAST team. The Elkview, W.Va., native concluded his junior season with a .363 batting average, the team’s second-best mark behind All-American Jedd Gyorko, and recorded 50 RBIs, as well as 73 base hits and eight home runs. “We’re very proud of Grant – he’s a tremendous player and has done an excellent job for our program throughout his career,” says 17-year Mountaineer coach Greg Van Zant. “This recognition is a great honor for him and shows the respect the conference coaches have for Grant.” Coming off an NCAA Regional appearance, Connecticut was tabbed the conference favorite, receiving nine of the possible 11 first-place votes and earning 117 points. St. John’s followed at No. 2 with 107 points. Louisville, USF and Pitt round out the top five, while Rutgers was slated sixth and Cincinnati and Notre Dame tied for seventh. Villanova, Seton Hall and Georgetown follow WVU and were ranked 10th, 11th and 12th, respectively. The Mountaineers open their season at the third annual BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, Feb. 18-20. The Mountaineers will open the challenge against Iowa on Friday, Feb. 19, at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium, in Clearwater, Fla., at 10 a.m. |
