Swimming: Women Finish Third, Men Fourth

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Mandie Nugent of the West Virginia swimming and diving teams earned her second-consecutive title in the 200 fly on the final day of the 2011 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships.

The Mountaineers completed the meet with the women scoring 396 points in third place behind BIG EAST Champion, Louisville (820.5 points) and Notre Dame (655.5). The men placed fourth with 470 points behind BIG EAST Champion, Louisville (917 points), Notre Dame (713.5 points) and Pitt (503 points).

Nugent’s preliminary time of 1:56.64 set a new BIG EAST and school record, while putting her in the first seed of the final. Nugent finished the final race almost two seconds ahead of the second place competitor in 1:57.00. Rachael Burnett also swam in the finals, finishing sixth in 2:03.22.

Kata Fodor continued her outstanding meet representing West Virginia in the finals of the 1,650 free. Fodor finished the race second in a time of 16:17.00. Hayley Edwards of Villanova narrowly took first in 16:15.92. Fodor’s time sets a new school record that was set in 2009 by Lindsey Largo at 16:22.18.

Caroline Larsson also had an exceptional swim in an earlier 1,650 free heat and placed 10th overall in a career-best time of 16:56.15.

Rachael Gorrie swam in her first collegiate final in the 200 back, where she completed the race in 2:01.15 for seventh place.

In the consolation finals of the 200 back, Danielle Smith finished ninth in 2:00.05.

After being seeded first after the preliminary session, Jared Goldthorpe took second in the 200 back. The NCAA “B” cut time came in at 1:44.31.

The consolation finals saw Jake Querciagrossa take 10th overall (1:48.70) and Eric Johnson finish in 13th overall (1:49.48). Both swimmers improved upon their preliminary times.

In the first lane of the pool, Brad Eichenseer was able to swim to a season-best 44.49 in the finals of the 100 free to place in fifth.

After holding the lead at the 50 yard mark, Tim Squires finished third in the 100 free consolation finals (11th overall) in a season-best time of 44.92.

Breanna McCann recorded an NCAA “B” cut time in the 200 breast with a seventh-place finish in 2:15.72.

Jaryn Studer represented WVU in the consolation finals, finishing 14th overall in 2:17.72.

George Farquhar swam to a sixth-place finish in the finals of the 200 breast with a time of 1:59.30, while Jack Greenhalgh swam in the consolation finals, taking 11th overall in 2:02.20.

Taylor Camp won an exciting 200 fly consolation final, where he finished in 1:46.26. Kyle Bandy and Ian Stavros also swam the race taking 15th (1:51.71) and 16th (1:51.96).

The put together 400 free relay squad of Fodor, Smith, Nugent and Burnett was able to hold on to third place overall with a sixth-place finish in a time of 3:25.31.

The final relay of the meet was made up of Eichenseer, Squires, Camp and Hugh Simmonds who placed second with a time of 2:57.77.

West Virginia will now likely go to a last chance meet and then wait to hear from the NCAA regarding any possible qualifications. The men’s championships are from March 24-26 in Minneapolis, Minn., while the women’s are held March 17-19 in Austin, Texas.
