MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Senior Chelsea Carrier earned her first All-America honor of the weekend this afternoon with a fifth-place showing in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in College Station, Texas.

Carrier finished with 4,128 total points after placing first in the 60-meter hurdles (8.29), 11th in the 800-meter run (2:21.32) and fourth in the long jump (5.96 meters), while also clearing 1.66 meters in the high jump and 11.30 meters in the shot put.

The honor marks third of her career and the second-straight year in the pentathlon.

Just minutes after the completion of the pentathlon, Carrier returned to compete in the preliminary round of the individual 60-meter hurdles and matched her personal-best time of 8.15 to qualify as one of the top eight to move on to the finals. She is assured All-America status in that event tomorrow as well.

“Chelsea just completed one of the best days of her career,” coach Sean Cleary says. “For Chelsea to establish herself as one of the best all-around athletes in this competition by virtue of her All-America performance, and then come off the 800-meter race and regroup in a matter of 45 minutes to run herself into the 60-meter hurdle finals was stunning to watch.”

Senior Keri Bland also had a good showing after posting a 10th-place finish in the preliminary round of the mile with a time of 4:40.11. The finish marks the second-straight year Bland has qualified for the finals in the mile.

“Keri Bland was impressive in qualifying for her second consecutive final in the mile,” Cleary concludes. “It has been a long, hard road for Keri with injuries, but she is back and in the finals. We are very proud of these two young ladies.”

Competition will conclude tomorrow with the finals of the mile and 60-meter hurdles at 5 p.m. and 5:20 p.m., respectively, followed by Jessica O’Connell’s weekend debut in the 3,000-meter run at 6:40 p.m.

West Virginia is in 24th place after day one with four team points.
