MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team (4-8, 1-3 BIG EAST) defeated Army, 4-1, today, at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.

“We played poorly in doubles and were very lucky to find a way to come back in singles,” says coach Tina Samara. “We got the win, but hopefully we play a lot better from the start in tonight’s match.”

The Black Knights started the match by sweeping the doubles competition.

The No. 1 pair of sophomore Emily Mathis and freshman Mary Chupa, and the No. 2 pair of junior Veronica Cardenas and sophomore Liv Pettersson fell, 8-4, in their respective matches. Freshman Melis Tanik and senior Ashley Pilsbury were also defeated in the No. 3 spot, 8-3.

The Mountaineers came back in the singles competition with four-straight wins in the No. 1-4 spots.

Tanik started the winning streak with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the No. 1 spot, followed by Cardenas capturing the point in the No. 4 spot.

Army’s Jessica Ahn pushed ahead in the No. 2 spot, but Mathis came back to win the match in a tough third-set tiebreaker (3-6, 7-5, 7-4). Chupa clinched the match with another tiebreaker win in the No. 3 spot, over Army’s Annie Hang.

Pilsbury and freshman Anna Rodionova were competing in the No. 5 and 6 spots, before the match was finished by decision.

The Mountaineers will continue action tonight, in a 7:30 p.m. match against Providence.
