MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Mandie Nugent of the West Virginia University women’s swimming team completed competition on Sunday afternoon in the 2011 Women’s NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships in Austin, Texas.

“Mandie had a great week and finished today just short of her goal of getting a second swim in the 200 fly by .05. She competed each day like a Mountaineer with a lot of pride,” coach Vic Riggs said. “It’s been extremely difficult spending a week by herself and being the sole WVU representative at this meet and I couldn't be happier for her and her accomplishments. Her 100 fly was her best morning swim and today was her second fastest 200fly time. We will use this as motivation for next season and keep trying to improve so we can come to this meet and swim best times and get second swims.”

Nugent began competition on Thursday afternoon with a swim in the 500 free, where she placed 57th with a time of 4:49.16.

In the 100 fly on Friday at the preliminary session, Nugent took 31st in 53.51.

On Saturday, the final day of competition, Nugent took 17th in the 200 fly, finishing in 1:57.08. Nugent set the school record at the BIG EAST Championships with a time of 1:56.64, while also being named the co-2011 BIG EAST Women’s Swimmer of the Meet.

This was Nugent’s second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships, as she swam in the championships last season as a freshman.

Sophomore Jared Goldthorpe will represent the men this weekend in Minneapolis, Minn., from March 24-26 at the 2011 Men’s NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships.
