MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - An eighth inning grand slam by Justin McDavid led West Virginia to an 8-5 comeback win to claim the four-game series with Canisius on Sunday afternoon at Hawley Field.
Down 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth, McDavid came to the plate and blasted a full-count pitch to right center, driving in Brady Wilson, Cody Dolan and Kevin Griffin, to take the 8-5 lead. Ryan McBroom scored the first run of the inning after hitting a single to left field and was driven in by pinch hitter LK Thompson, who grounded out to first base.
Griffin reached base after getting hit by a pitch, and then walks from pinch hitter Dolan and Wilson loaded the bases for McDavid, who slugged his first home run of the season.
West Virginia (13-8) finished with eight runs on 12 hits with one error, while Canisius (5-13) scored five runs on 10 hits, committing one error.
Josh Harlow (1-1) earned the win for his 1.2 innings pitched, allowing no runs and no hits. Starter Josh McCauley earned a no decision with seven innings pitched, surrendering 10 hits and four earned runs.
Wilson had another standout day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. McDavid, Dan DiBartolomeo and Jeremy Gum had two hits apiece.
Canisius was led by Sean Jamieson who was 2 for 4 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI. Jon Fitzsimmons took the loss for Canisius after giving up two runs and two hits, while being unable to record an out. Starter Billy Martin went seven innings and allowed two earned runs on nine hits.
WVU scored one run in both the fourth and fifth innings, with Gum hitting an RBI single to drive in DiBartolomeo in the fourth and Wilson plating Chris Rasky with a single in the fifth.
Canisius opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on two hits. Brian Burton led off with a single and scored after a fielding error by McDavid, while a fielder’s choice by Kevin Whitehead drove in Andrew Russo.
The Golden Griffins also scored two in the fifth on back-to-back singles from Drew Pettit and Russo, plating Jamieson and Burton. Jamieson added a solo home run in the top of the seventh.
The Mountaineers will finish their non-conference home stand with Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, March 22 at 4 p.m. The squads will also play on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
