Women's Tennis: WVU Defeats Upstate
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team (7-9, 3-3 BIG EAST) defeated South Carolina Upstate, today, in a 6-1 match at the Upstate Tennis Complex in Spartanburg, S.C. “We did well, especially dealing with having a few of our important girls out of the lineup,” says coach Tina Samara. “It was extremely windy outside, so it was more about who handled the weather conditions better, rather than who was a better team overall.” The Mountaineers started the day by sweeping the doubles competition, as the No. 1 pair of sophomore Emily Mathis and freshman Mary Chupa won 8-2. Junior Veronica Cardenas and freshman Liv Pettersson won in an 8-7(4) tiebreaker in the No. 2 spot, while freshman Anna Rodionova and junior Catie Wickline paired up in the No. 3 spot, to win the match, 8-3. WVU continued the lead as it captured five of the six matches in singles. Mathis won 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 1 spot, while Chupa (No. 2) defeated the Spartans’ Ana Sofia Camberos, 6-2, 6-2. Cardenas fought to a third-set tiebreaker in the No. 3 spot, but fell 5-7, 6-3, 7-10 to Martinez. The Mountaineers clinched the match as Rodionova (No. 4), Pettersson (No. 5) and Wickline (No. 6) won the remaining three matches in their respective spots. WVU will continue action Friday, March 25, as it travels to Richmond, Va., to go up against the Spiders at 2 p.m. |
