Gymnastics: WVU Awarded 2013 Regional

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Committee announced yesterday regional and championship sites for the 2012 and 2013 National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Championships, and West Virginia University was picked to play host to one of the six regionals.
The Mountaineers will welcome their eighth regional since 1983 on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at the WVU Coliseum.
WVU, which will compete as the No. 6 seed at the 2011 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Saturday, April 2, in Athens, Ga., last played host to a regional championships in 2010. The Mountaineers finished fourth, with No. 1-seed Stanford and No. 2-seed Michigan advancing to the NCAA National Championships.
The WVU Coliseum is nationally recognized as an exciting venue for gymnastics meets, and 2,144 fans, the seventh-best attendance mark in program history, were present for last year’s championships. The largest crowd to attend a regional in Morgantown was 3,492 in 1994, which is also the largest gymnastics crowd in Coliseum history.
The Mountaineers have qualified for 28 NCAA regionals, including this year’s championships.
Five additional schools also will host regional championships in 2013: University of Oklahoma, Oregon State University, University of Florida, Ohio State University and University of Alabama. The University of California, Los Angeles, will play host to the 2013 National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Championships on April 19-21.
