Women's Tennis: WVU Falls to Marquette
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team (7-12, 3-5 BIG EAST) fell to BIG EAST foe Marquette, today, in a 2-5 match in Hartford, Conn. “We are certainly competing at a higher level than we have been, after our matches against Rutgers and Marquette,” says coach Tina Samara. “We’re trying to be in the best shape for the conference tournament and I still think we’re going in the right direction.” In doubles, the Mountaineers were up by three points in the No. 1 and 3 spots, but the Golden Eagles came back to sweep the matches and capture the doubles point. Freshman Mary Chupa and sophomore Emily Mathis were defeated 8-7(4) in the No. 1 spot, while the No. 2 pair of junior Veronica Cardenas and sophomore Liv Pettersson and the No. 3 pair of senior Ashley Pilsbury and freshman Melis Tanik fell, 8-4, in their respective matches. “We put ourselves in positions to win the doubles point and just didn’t get it done,” Samara admits. “It’s the difference between winning a match and waiting for your opponent to lose. Against better competition, you’re not going to get any free matches handed to you. We didn’t stay aggressive and they found their way back into it.” In singles, Mathis and Chupa captured the points for the Mountaineers in the No. 1 and 2 spots. Mathis won her match in the third set over Marquette’s Kelly Barry, while Chupa defeated Gillian Hush, 6-4, 6-0. “Mary is playing really well and she’s continuing to make improvements almost every time she’s on the court,” adds Samara. “Emily didn’t have a great day, but she did what she needed to do to stay in the match.” The Golden Eagles clinched the match with four wins in the singles competition. Tanik (No. 1) and freshman Anna Rodionova (No. 6) were defeated in the third set of their respective matches. Cardenas (No. 4) fell in a tight, 7-6(5), 7-5 match against Marquette’s Rachael Hush, while Pilsbury was defeated, 6-2, 6-1, by No. 5 Rocio Diaz. The Mountaineers will continue action on Sunday, April 10, as they go up against BIG EAST foe Connecticut at 10:30 a.m. |
