MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A total of 431 West Virginia University student-athletes were recognized for their achievement in the classroom, Thursday evening, at the annual Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll Banquet.
Implemented in 1989, the Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll was created to recognize students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Since the program began in 1989, nearly 4,000 student-athletes have earned a place on the honor roll.
“I think one main reason we have been able to keep increasing the number of student-athletes honored at this event is because we have people who care about them working very closely with them to balance academics and athletics,” says Garrett Ford, associate athletic director for student services. “We are able to give a little love and attention to every young person who comes to WVU to live out their dream of playing their sport and I'm sure that will continue long after my retirement.”
Student-athletes from all 17 sports teams, in addition to cheerleading and athletic training, gathered at the Waterfront Place Hotel for dinner and acknowledgment of their academic achievements. WVU track and field athlete Brittany Fink and wrestler Donnie Jones represented the student-athletes as speakers at the event.
“I was really impressed with our senior student-athlete speakers who described their Mountaineer experience. Brittany Fink and Donnie Jones captured what an honor and privilege it is to represent WVU on their respective fields of play, and how their sacrifices and hard work will have paid off for them as they prepare for their future,” says Dr. Paul Downey, educational counselor for student-athletes. “Each senior class continues to raise the academic bar for our underclassmen, who are up to the challenge.”
