The Mountaineers go into tis weekend with an overall record of 8-12, while going 4-5 in conference action. WVU gained its BIG EAST victories over Pitt (5-2), Providence (7-0), Seton Hall (6-1) and Connecticut (5-2). The Mountaineers are a No. 11 seed in the tournament, and will go face No. 6 seeded Rutgers at noon. “We feel that getting another shot at Rutgers is a good thing,” says coach Tina Samara. “After playing them the last time, we felt that we could make some adjustments and walk away with a better result if we played them again.” The Scarlet Knights defeated the Mountaineers earlier this month, in a 6-1 match at the Ridgeview Racquet Club in Morgantown, W.Va. Junior Veronica Cardenas and sophomore Liv Pettersson captured the Mountaineers’ lone doubles victory in an 8-7(5) match in the No. 2 spot. Rutgers came back in the No. 1 and 3 spots to win the doubles point. Freshman Mary Chupa captured the only point for the Mountaineers in the singles competiton, with a 7-6(1), 5-7, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 spot. Fresman Melis Tanik (No. 1) and Cardenas (No. 4) also fought to tiebreakers, but fell behind in the third set of their respective matches, while sophomore Emily Mathis fell in a close 6-5, 6-5 match in the No. 2 spot. “Despite the score, most of the matches were very competitive,” adds Samara. “If we show up in every spot tomorrow, we have a good chance of beating Rutgers and moving forward in the tournament.” |
