MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team finished its spring season after falling, 2-4, to No. 10-seeded St. John's, today, at the 2011 BIG EAST Championships in South Bend, Ind.

WVU concluded its spring season with an overall record of 8-14, while going 4-7 in BIG EAST action after falling to Rutgers and St. John's in the tournament.

“We put ourselves in a position to win, and we did not execute,” says coach Tina Samara. “This was the most disappointing loss of the year for us.”

The Mountaineers began the match by capturing the doubles point, winning, 8-2, in the No. 1 spot and clinching the point with an 8-0 victory in the No. 3 spot.

St. John's came back to tie the match in the No. 1 spot with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over freshman Melis Tanik, but freshman Mary Chupa regained the lead with a 7-6(3), 6-0 victory in the No. 3 spot.

The Red Storm tied the match for a second time with a 7-6(10), 6-3 victory over freshman Anna Rodionova in the No. 6 spot, then clinched the match after winning two consecutive tiebreakers over sophomore Emily Mathis (4-6, 6-2, 5-7) in the No. 2 spot and junior Veronica Cardenas (6-3, 1-6, 3-6) in the No. 4 spot.

“I hope to see our returning players come back ready to compete,” Samara concludes. “We are looking forward to next season and having the four new players that will be joining us.”
