Baseball: WVU Rallies to Win at Villanova

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Down one run in the top of the ninth, the West Virginia University baseball team rallied for three runs to lead the Mountaineers to a 4-2 come from behind victory over Villanova, this afternoon, in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.

Facing Wildcat relief pitcher Mike Francisco, sophomore Brady Wilson reached on a one-out walk, quickly advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on Justin McDavid’s ground out to short. VU intentionally walked redshirt senior Grant Buckner, before redshirt senior Jeremy Gum’s RBI single through the right side drove Wilson home, tying the game at 2-2. Redshirt freshman T.J. Kuban singled up the middle to score Buckner, and senior Kevin Griffin plated Gum with a single to left field for the game winner.

Today’s victory was the Mountaineers’ (25-18, 11-7 BIG EAST) lone win in their three-game series with the BIG EAST-foe Wildcats (17-25, 4-14 BIG EAST).

WVU scored four runs on 13 hits, while VU tallied two runs on 10 hits. Neither team committed an error.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Ryan Tezak (3-0) earned the win, giving up one hit and striking out two and no walks in 1.2 innings of work. Francisco took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings, walking three and striking out four.

Senior starter Andy Berry worked a solid 7.1 innings for the Mountaineers, allowing two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Gum paced the Mountaineers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scoring a run. Griffin, Kuban and McBroom also had two hits each. Buckner went 1-for-3, extending his streak of reaching base to a BIG EAST-best 37 games. Paul Rambaud led the Wildcats at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

McDavid scored the Mountaineers’ first run in the top of the third. With an out on the board, he singled through right field and advanced to second on a passed ball. Buckner flew out to center field, pushing McDavid to third base, and Gum drove him home with an RBI single down the third base line.

The Wildcats knotted the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth. After Berry struck out Dain Hall, Michael Erb singled up the middle, moved to second on Nelson’s single and scored on Paul Rambaud’s single to left center.

VU broke the tie in the sixth. Marlon Calbi led off with a single to left field, and Steve Schrenk’s bunt down the third base line advanced him to second. He moved to third on McDavid’s throw and then scored on Matt Fleishman’s single to center.

WVU continues BIG EAST play at Hawley Field next weekend, playing host to Cincinnati. The Mountaineers and Bearcats will meet in a doubleheader on May 7, with the first game scheduled to start at 2 p.m. The three-game series will wrap up on May 8, with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
