MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s basketball coach Mike Carey today announced the hiring of Lester Rowe as an assistant coach on the Mountaineer staff.

Familiar with the Mountaineer traditions, Rowe served as a WVU men’s basketball assistant coach from 1997-2002 and had a standout basketball career as a player at WVU from 1982-85.

“We’re excited to have Lester back with the Mountaineer family,” says Carey. “I’ve known him for a long time and he brings a lot of knowledge and experience to our staff. Lester has always been loyal to West Virginia University and the state of West Virginia.”

“I want to thank coach Carey, Oliver Luck and Mike Parsons for the opportunity to help with the women’s basketball program. I’m really excited about coming back and looking forward to working with coach Carey and the rest of his staff to help win a BIG EAST title and a national championship because, in the end, I think that is the goal we all have,” says Rowe. “The program is in good shape and I’m excited to get to know the rest of the staff and the players.”

Rowe first reunited with the Mountaineer basketball program when he was hired as an assistant coach on Gale Catlett’s staff in September 1997. In addition to coaching, he assisted in on-campus recruiting, scouting and served as a player liaison in administrative matters. In his first season as an assistant, WVU won 24 games and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1998.

Known to Mountaineer fans as “Lester Rowe from Buffalo”, he was a four-year starter and West Virginia went 90-23 and won three conference championships during Rowe’s playing career.

Finishing his career 12th among WVU career scorers with 1,524 points, Rowe, a two-time WVU team captain, was named to the Atlantic 10 all-rookie team, all-conference team and tournament MVP during his career.

Rowe ranks among the WVU career leaders in field goals made, rebounds and field goal percentage. For his career, he averaged 12.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Rowe had a career-high 29 points against Rhode Island on Jan. 12, 1984.

A member of the 1976-85 WVU all-time basketball team, Rowe played professional basketball for eight years in Argentina, the Philippines, Venezuela, France, Germany and the United States.

The Buffalo, N.Y., native earned a bachelor’s of science degree in sport management from West Virginia in 1985.

A current resident of Morgantown, Rowe has been a commercial property manager and sales executive with Petroplus Lane, LLC since 2002. From 2005-10, Rowe played an integral role in West Virginia AAU Basketball as he served as the head coach of the West Virginia Hornets and assisted with the West Virginia Tornadoes and the West Virginia Blue Devils.

Rowe and his wife Lisa have two daughters, Monalisa and Monique.
