After 31-plus hours of traveling from Morgantown, the West Virginia University men’s basketball team arrived safely in Catania, Sicily, to start its 2011 tour of Italy.

On Monday morning at 9 a.m., the Mountaineers boarded a bus from the Coliseum to Pittsburgh and arrived in Sicily at 9:30 p.m. Italy time (3:30 p.m. Eastern time) on Tuesday. WVU took an early afternoon flight on Monday to Newark, N.J., before spending more than five hours in the Newark airport because of a flight delay. The Mountaineers departed Newark at 8 p.m. Monday evening and arrived in Rome at 10:30 a.m. Italy time. Because of the flight delay in Newark, the Mountaineers missed their connection in Rome and spent eight hours in the Rome airport. WVU finally left Rome at 7:30 p.m. and arrived in Sicily at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.

A tired group of Mountaineers checked into their hotel around 10:30 p.m. in Catania, Sicily, where they will stay until Friday morning. The team has a full schedule on Wednesday, touring the Castello Ursino and Duomo Cathedral. The Mountaineers will play the first game of their tour Wednesday evening at Naval Air Station Sigonella.

NOTE: Italy time is six hours ahead of the Eastern time zone.
