MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Throughout the 2012 preseason, the West Virginia University gymnastics team will periodically check in with Mountaineer fans, providing updates on the progress made in Cary Gym and the weight room. The team also will share stories from its multiple team-bonding trips and activities.

This year’s third tale comes from junior Kaylyn Millick. On the cusp of her second season with the Mountaineers, Millick, a transfer out of Eastern Michigan, returns as one of the team’s strongest floor competitors. She competed in all 13 meets last year, five as an all-arounder, and earned 402.8 points, the second-best team total. She also earned six scores of 9.8 or better on floor, including a career-best 9.9 mark, and finished a team-best fifth on floor at the 2011 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships with a 9.85 mark.

A two-time NACGC/W Scholastic All-American, Millick takes pride in wearing the Old Gold and Blue and believes she was born to be a Mountaineer. Her teammates will depend on her enthusiasm and passion in 2012.

I cannot believe that I am starting my junior year already. I spent all summer preparing for it; whether it was taking classes to catch up on credits or working out with our strength coach, Beth Byron, to get in shape for the 2012 season, I have been working really hard.

It’s crazy to think we are already four weeks in to the school year. I have started my first year in the nursing program, so I am very busy with school work and studying. Balancing everything is going to be tough, but I am very excited to get rolling in my major!

Along with getting everything going with school, the Mountaineers just had their second football game against Norfolk State last Saturday, advancing their record to 2-0. This year, the gymnastics team was selected by the Mountaineer Athletic Club and the Varsity Club as the premiere sport to help host the Varsity Club tailgating tent at home football games. It is a huge opportunity for us to mingle with WVU alumni and promote our program to dedicated fans in the community. Game day is a great time for the team and the coaching staff to get to know each other better and have a lot of fun!

The first month of school has been very exciting for the squad. We have done many team-bonding activities, and everyone seems to be getting along very well. The chemistry we already share with each other is advantageous in accomplishing the collective goals we have made for the upcoming season. Everyone has been working very hard during open gym to prepare for the testing day that will occur this coming Monday, our first official practice of the 2012 season. I am confident that everyone is ready, and I am anxious and excited to get official practices started!

I have very high hopes for the team this year. I think that with the hard work and passion that the team is already displaying, we will be able to go really far this season.

Let’s Go Mountaineers!!
