MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Women’s soccer senior Drea Barklage has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Mountaineers to a pair of victories last week, the conference announced today.
The St. Louis native Logged all 194 minutes at center back in a 2-0-0 conference opening weekend. Barklage scored the game-tying goal in the 87th minute to extend the match at USF, leading to a Blake Miller goal and 2-1 double overtime win. Barklage and the defense held USF without a corner kick on the night.
Against No. 8 Marquette, Barklage helped WVU hold the Golden Eagles to nine shots, nine below their season average, and only four shots on-goal. Neither MU leading scorer Maegan Kelly nor forward Rachel Brown attempted a shot against Barklage and her teammates.
Barklage joins Sara Keane (Aug. 22) and Meghan Lewis (Sept. 12) as Mountaineers to earn conference weekly awards this season.
Senior forward Blake Miller and redshirt freshman Keane were named to the league’s weekly honor roll. Miller totaled five points on the week, including the game-winner at USF. She also had a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win over Marquette. Keane was great off her line and totaled seven saves in the two matches.
West Virginia resumes BIG EAST play with pair of home matches this weekend against Seton Hall and Rutgers.
