MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia women’s tennis team will head to Wake Forest, N.C. for its second road trip of the season where it will partake in the Wake Forest Invitational.

The three day tournament will kick off at 9 a.m. on Friday morning.

In total, the Wake Forest Invitational will include 17 teams, including Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth, Marshall, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Winthrop, which all finished last season ranked in the ITA Division I team tennis rankings.

“This weekend is going to have a pretty strong field,” says coach Tina Samara. “It is not going to get any easier in the coming weeks, and we want to see who is going to go out and fight hard from our group of kids.”

The Mountaineers last competed two weeks ago when they traveled to Wilmington, N.C. for the UNC-Wilmington Collegiate Invitational.

WVU will look to continue its strong doubles play from two weeks ago, as its three tandems finished the weekend with a 4-2 overall record.

Sophomores Melis Tanik and Mary Chupa will team up in the A Doubles draw and face Olga Blank and Kelly Cameron of UNC-Wilmington in their opening round matchup.

“They seem to be doing really well together, and they seem like they are going to be able to last together,” Samara says. “We are glad they are going to compete since they didn’t get the chance to compete together a couple of weeks ago.”

Freshman Ikttesh Chahal and senior Catie Wickline will pair to compete in the B Doubles draw against Davidson’s Elise Held and Brites Moniz-Soares in their first round match.

Tanik will also compete in the A Singles draw, where she has an opening round tilt against Karolina Chernaya of Campbell.

In the B Singles draw, Chahal’s first round contest will be against Bryn Khoury of Elon, and in D Singles play, Chupa will take on Held.

Lastly, Wickline will compete out of the E Singles draw, where she has a first round match against East Tennessee State’s Giulia Andreazza.
