Women's Tennis: WVU Finishes Final Day of Play
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s tennis team concluded its final day of competition at the Wake Forest Invitational in Wake Forest, N.C., on Sunday. Sophomore Melis Tanik, who had defeated Richmond’s Helen Cunningham on Saturday afternoon, was defeated by Christina Lee of UNC-Wilmington in Flight A Singles play, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Tanik, along with fellow sophomore Mary Chupa, also completed their play in Flight A Doubles action, as they fell to Cunningham and Alex Smyth of Richmond, 8-6. In Flight B Doubles, senior Catie Wickline and freshman Ikttesh Chahal won in a walkover against Wake Forest’s Rebecca Siegler and Zane Zarina. Chahal finished her Flight B Singles draw with a loss to Marine Wieliczko of East Tennessee State, 6-3, 6-2. The Mountaineers will resume competition on Oct. 7 with their lone home event of the fall season, the Martha Thorn Invitational. The three-day tournament will play host to seven teams, including Pitt, Youngstown State and Duquesne. |
