MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s tennis team will play host to the Martha Thorn Invitational this weekend, as it welcomes six other teams for its lone home event of the fall season.
Competition is set to begin Friday morning at 9 a.m. and will conclude Sunday.
“It is definitely nice to not be traveling for everybody, including the kids with class,” says coach Tina Samara. “Also, it gives people a chance to come out and see what the team is doing at home. We are happy to have a nice forecast because that is something that you always worry about.”
Pitt, Ohio State and Virginia Tech make up part of the group, while Duquesne, Cleveland State and Youngstown State round out the rest of the field.
The three day competition will be held at the WVU tennis courts along with the newly constructed Evansdale Recreation Center tennis courts and will consist of three singles flights and two doubles flights.
The Mountaineers will have a total of six players competing in singles and will field three doubles teams in the event.
“We are just trying to get out there and compete on every court,” Samara says. “We also want to build and improve upon what we have been working on.”
Sophomore Melis Tanik, junior Emily Mathis and freshman Ikttesh Chahal will play in the Flight A Singles draw. Sophomore Mary Chupa and senior Veronica Cardenas will compete in the Flight B Singles draw. Lastly, senior Catie Wickline will play in Flight C Singles action.
In doubles competition, Chahal and Mathis will play in Flight A Doubles, while Tanik and Chupa will compete in Flight B Doubles along with Wickline and Cardenas.
Tanik leads the team with two singles victories, while also being part of a team-high four doubles wins this fall.
Updated brackets and results will be available throughout the weekend on MSNsportsNET.com.
