MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – In the second day of the Martha Thorn Invitational, the West Virginia women’s tennis team had three players advance to the finals of their respective brackets.
Junior Emily Mathis, who is playing in Flight A Singles, defeated No. 1 seeded Isel Martinez-Marcos of Virginia Tech, 6-4, 6-4.
Mathis will take on No. 2 seeded Noelle Malley of Ohio State on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. for the Flight A Singles championship.
The other Mountaineers to advance to the finals were sophomores Melis Tanik and Mary Chupa.
The tandem moved into the championship round with a victory over Amanda Wickman and Molly Wickman of Pitt, 8-4.
In the final, Chupa and Tanik will compete against Kimmy Borza and Gabrielle Catanzariti of Pitt.
In Flight A Singles consolation action, Tanik defeated Catrine Bjerrehus of Cleveland State, 7-6, 6-3 and will face Cleveland State’s Maria Lazaris Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
Freshman Ikttesh Chahal looked to pick up her second singles win of the weekend, but her efforts fell short, as she lost to Catanzariti, 3-6, 6-2, 11-9.
In the Flight B consolation draw, Chupa won her lone singles match of the day, as she defeated Nicole Janek of Cleveland State, 6-3, 7-6.
In Flight B Doubles consolation competition, seniors Veronica Cardenas and Catie Wickline defeated Chandler Consonery and Tara Majdalani of Duquesne, 8-3.
The final round of play in the Martha Thorn Invitational will resume at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
