Women's Soccer: Schwindel, McCarthy Honored
West Virginia won a pair of crucial BIG EAST home matches over the weekend to remain in first place of the American Division standings, knocking off St. John’s, 3-0, and defeating Syracuse, 5-1. Schwindel scored two goals on four shots in only 110 minutes of BIG EAST action. The Livingston, N.J., native scored on a long range blast in WVU’s win over St. John’s and out-jumped a defender for a header goal against Syracuse. She has scored at least one point in five of the last seven matches and has scored 11 points on four goals and three assists in league play. McCarthy was outstanding at outside back and recorded game-winning assists in both weekend matches. She also helped WVU’s defense post a shutout against St. John’s – its seventh of the year. The Ajax, Ontario, native got forward to generate offense in both matches – constantly making runs into the offensive third. Five of McCarthy’s team-best six assists have come in conference play. The Mountaineers, winners of nine of their last 10 matches, close out the regular season with three BIG EAST road contests, beginning with a trip to Providence on Friday, Oct. 14. |
