MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team is set to compete in its final regatta of the season, Saturday, at the Philadelphia Frostbite Regatta on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.

“Although the regatta is a rather informal event run without heats, it provides another valuable opportunity for us to gauge our progress as we continue working towards the spring racing season,” says coach Jimmy King.

The Mountaineers have 12 entries in this year’s regatta with three boats set to compete in women’s open double competition, three boats set to compete in women’s varsity open four competition, two boats set to compete in women’s varsity eight competition, and two boats set to compete in both the women’s novice open four event and the women’s novice open eight event.

The Philadelphia Frostbite runs its competition different from that of other fall regattas. Instead of the traditional 6,000-meter course, the rowing team will race on a 2,000-meter course similar to what is normally seen during the spring racing season.

Additionally, each event will be run in flights instead of the option of advancing to the finals through separate heats. Each flight is considered a final.

“The Frostbite is a fun regatta at which to conclude our fall racing,” King adds. “The temporary shift of focus to sprint racing provides some good variety to our training routine as we spend a bit of time working on racing starts and higher rates.”

Last year, the Mountaineers experienced success with the Varsity 8+ ‘A’ crew placing first in its flight with a time of 7:13.92, and two Varsity 4+ crews placing second in their respective flights. The team also saw the Novice 4+ ‘A’ crew place first in its flight with a time of 8:40.69, while the ‘B’ crew finished second.

The regatta marks the first event of the season in which the varsity and novice crews will race together.

“I am really looking forward to the racing this weekend,” says associate head coach Tina Griffith. “Practice has gone well with preparing them for the spring type race format, and we have had some good pieces the past few days. It will be good to see how the novice team goes about this competition now that it has experience.”
