VSR: Harrison Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Kate Harrison is the West Virginia University Student-Athlete of the Week for her performance at the NCAA Cross Country Championship last Monday in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Toronto, Ontario native finished first for the No. 9-ranked Mountaineers in eighth place overall out of 255 runners, beating former WVU All-American Megan Metcalfe’s 2002 school record of ninth place for the event. She finished the 6k race in 19:50, her best 6k mark of the year.
The feat helped the team to an eighth-place finish with 297 points, its fourth Top-10 mark in five years.

The West Virginia women’s basketball team returns home for a contest with La Salle on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum ... WVU will close out the week with a 4 p.m. game on Saturday, Dec. 3, as it plays host to Boston.

West Virginia went 1-1 last week at the 2011 Woodland Hills Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Classic with a 63-54 upset win over No. 25 UCLA in the opening round, but fell to host Cal State Northridge by one point, 48-47, in the final minutes of the championship round ... the upset over a ranked team was the first of this season ... sophomore Taylor Palmer was named to the all-tournament team as she averaged 18.0 points per game, totaling 36 points and eight 3-pointers.

West Virginia placed in the Top 20 in both indoor and outdoor track as indoor finished 18th in the country and outdoor placed 20th at NCAAs ... it marked the fourth year in a row that WVU has placed in the Top 20 for both seasons ... altogether 13 All-American performances were accomplished during the year, eight BIG EAST champions were crowned and coach Sean Cleary and his staff were named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year ...
