Men's Basketball: Jones Named Player of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior forward Kevin Jones was named College Sports Madness National Player of the Week, as well as Big East player of the week, it was announced on Monday.

Jones averaged 23 points and 14.7 rebounds in games last week against Tennessee Tech, Missouri State and Baylor in the Las Vegas Classic.

Jones began the week by scoring 25 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in West Virginia’s 72-53 victory over Tennessee Tech on Monday.

Against Missouri State Thursday night, Jones scored 16 points and grabbed 13 boards in a 70-68 overtime win for the Mountaineers.

The forward ended his week with a dominating 28-point, 17-rebound performance in West Virginia’s 83-81 overtime loss to sixth-ranked Baylor. Jones was 13 of 21 from the floor against the Bears, and finished the week hitting 31 of his 55 shot attempts.

For the season, the Mount Vernon, N.Y., resident shows averages of 21 points and 11.9 rebounds per game for the 9-3 Mountaineers, which open Big East play Wednesday night against 7-5 Villanova at the WVU Coliseum in a 7 p.m. game.
